It’s not every day that pre-schoolers get to see live theater, or elementary students learn how to create sculptures. And rarely do high-schoolers mount their very own photography exhibit. But at Immaculate Conception, kids are getting the chance to do all of the above, thanks to a unique partnership between a grandparent, a principal, and some talented local artists.

Immaculate Conception is a small, Catholic school in Midtown with just 400 students. Unlike some larger schools, it doesn’t have a lot of extra money for special arts programs. But Royal Stewart, a retired advertising executive with two granddaughters who attend IC, saw a way to connect the arts community with the school. Stewart got to know Sally Hermsdorfer, IC’s high school principal, when he was a substitute teacher.
