I’m dropping my sons off at their Montessori school when my 3-year-old’s teacher says to me, “You have to watch Jiro do the trinomial cube.”

Pretending to know what a trinomial cube is, I follow Jiro as he picks up a box off of the shelf, sets it on a nearby table, and goes to work. The box has a special internal hinge which allows the sides to open out flat, permitting unhindered access to 27 wooden cubes of various sizes, painted red, black, blue, and yellow. He takes them out, mixes them up, and then sets about putting the cubes back into the box at lightening speed. “This helps his visual perception of three dimensional patterns,” the teacher explained. “It will also help prepare him for mathematics.”
