Donald’s Donuts has long had a sign for kolaches, but a few weeks ago, they actually started serving them again.(See a picture here).
Kolaches hail from Czechoslovakia and are typically thought of as pastries with fruit filling. We Americans have started serving klobasneks and calling them kolaches. A klobasnek is a pastry filled with a sausage. This is what Donald’s offers. You can get one large or small, and the sausage can be filled with cheese or cheese and jalapeno.
My kids like the small sausage and cheese kolaches as much as they like sprinkled donuts. I prefer the large sausage, cheese, and jalapeno ones. They are a super-spicy, sure way to wake you up. The surrounding pastry is quite tasty too and could definitely be eaten on its own. It’s sweet but not too sweet and just a little flaky. I think of it as half-croissant, half-donut.
