Small steps on path to be smarter consumers

Last week, I overheard Satchel, my 8-year-old, having the following conversation with his friend, Theo. (We were in the car.)

Theo: "Ew, look! There's McDonald's."

Satchel: "They have the bad cows."

Theo: "And chickens."

Theo had told Satchel about the bad cows after either watching or hearing about the documentary "Food, Inc.", which exposes America's industrialized food system and its effect on our environment, health, economy and workers' rights. I've seen it, but haven't let Satchel or his 6-year-old brother, Jiro, watch it yet because it is very graphic and disturbing on several levels...(Read more)
