"Knitting is the background noise that makes it easier for us to talk about our feelings," says Christiana Leibovich, 32, founder of the Memphis Knit Mafia. She explains that when everyone is knitting, they aren't staring at you.
Leibovich taught herself to knit with books and Internet instruction. On her lunch breaks, she would go to the Yarn Studio (now under new management and named Stash) in Cooper-Young for help and supplies. "I was a part of an online community at Ravelry.com and noticed that there were knitting groups set up in other cities.
